Japan

How long should you spend in Japan ?

Japan is a country you could spend months exploring and still have plenty left to discover. But you don’t need weeks of annual leave to make the most of it. Even 7 days can give you a fantastic first taste of Japan if you focus on a few key destinations rather than trying to see everything. And if you fall in love with it, there’s always an excuse to come back for more.

So, how long should you stay in Japan ?

THE LEAVE LIST SWEET SPOT

If you can take 14 days, take 14 days.

It’s long enough to experience Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, while giving you the freedom to add Mount Fuji, Nara, Hiroshima or another destination without turning your holiday into a race against the clock.

7 days

With just one week, I’d keep your itinerary focused. Trying to see too much of Japan will mean spending more time on trains than actually enjoying the country.

I’d recommend focusing on Tokyo and Kyoto, with a day trip in Osaka if you want to squeeze in another city.

You could see:

  • Tokyo
  • Kyoto
  • Osaka or a day trip

The takeaway :
7 days is enough to get a taste of Japan, but you’ll need to be selective. It’s a great option if Japan is part of a longer Asia trip or you simply don’t have much annual leave to spare.

10 days

Ten days gives you a little more flexibility and allows you to add another destination or spend more time exploring the cities.

I’d recommend a route around Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka, with a few day trips depending on your interests.

You could see:

  • Tokyo
  • Kyoto
  • Osaka
  • Mount Fuji area
  • One or two day trips

The takeaway :
10 days is a great compromise if two weeks feels difficult to fit around your annual leave.

14 days

If you can take two weeks, this is what I’d choose.

Fourteen days gives you enough time to see Japan’s biggest highlights while still having time to slow down and actually enjoy each destination.

You can combine the big cities with traditional towns, nature and day trips without having to change hotels every other night.

You could see:

  • Tokyo
  • Mount Fuji / Hakone
  • Kyoto
  • Osaka
  • Nara
  • Hiroshima & Miyajima
  • A traditional town or countryside escape

The takeaway :
14 days is the sweet spot. You get a much better balance between seeing a lot and having time to enjoy it. Keep in mind that Japan is bigger than it looks. Moving between regions takes time, so the longer your trip, the more worthwhile it becomes to venture beyond Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

21 days

Three weeks gives you the freedom to go further. Instead of simply ticking off Japan’s most famous cities, you can explore different regions and experience a slower side of the country.

You could head north towards Hokkaido, explore the Japanese Alps or travel further south towards Hiroshima, Fukuoka or Okinawa.

You could see:

  • Tokyo
  • Mount Fuji / Hakone
  • Kyoto
  • Osaka
  • Nara
  • Hiroshima & Miyajima
  • Japanese Alps or Hokkaido
  • Okinawa or southern Japan

The takeaway :
21 days is ideal if Japan is the main trip rather than one stop on a bigger holiday. You’ll have time to explore beyond the usual tourist route and experience more of the country’s incredible variety.
