Long weekends & city escapes

How far can you really go in three days?

Three days might not sound like much, but with the right destination, a long weekend can feel like a proper escape.

The key is choosing somewhere easy to reach, easy to navigate and compact enough to explore without spending your precious time travelling between places. For three days, I’d stick mainly to European cities where you can arrive, settle in and start exploring almost immediately. You don’t need to see everything. Pick one great city, slow down and make the most of it.

Not sure which destination is right for you?

Three days works best when the journey is short and the destination is easy to explore. For a quick European escape, I’d choose based on the experience you’re looking for:

The classic long weekend.

Paris is almost made for a three-day escape. Spend your time wandering between neighbourhoods, seeing the city’s iconic sights, eating exceptionally well and leaving enough time to simply enjoy the atmosphere.

History, food and la dolce vita.

Rome packs an extraordinary amount into a relatively compact centre. You can walk between ancient ruins, Renaissance masterpieces, beautiful piazzas and some of Italy’s best food.

City life with a Mediterranean twist.

Barcelona gives you the best of both worlds: extraordinary architecture, brilliant food and a Mediterranean atmosphere. Three days is enough to experience the highlights without trying to see every corner of the city.

Canals, culture & neighbourhood wandering

Amsterdam is ideal when you want a city break that doesn’t require a packed itinerary. Spend your days walking or cycling between canals, museums, cafés and neighbourhoods.

Food, wine & colourful streets

Porto is one of my favourite choices for a three-day escape because you can see a lot without feeling like you’re constantly rushing. Add a long lunch, a few glasses of port and plenty of time wandering the colourful streets.

The ultimate city break.

London is one of those cities where you could return again and again and still find something new. From royal landmarks and world-class museums to colourful neighbourhoods, historic pubs and incredible food, there’s plenty to fill a long weekend.

Scandinavian design, food & harbour life

Copenhagen is compact, beautiful and incredibly easy to explore. Spend your days cycling between colourful harbour fronts, design shops, bakeries and some of Europe’s best food.

Fairytale streets & beautiful architecture

Prague feels like stepping into another world. Its compact historic centre makes it particularly well suited to a short trip, with plenty of time to wander without needing to constantly check the clock.

Thermal baths, grand architecture & nightlife

Budapest is one of Europe’s best city breaks if you want plenty to do without spending a fortune. Explore both sides of the Danube, soak in the thermal baths and finish the day in one of the city’s famous ruin bars.

Grand architecture, culture & coffee houses

Vienna is perfect for a slower three-day city break. Spend your time between grand palaces, museums, coffee houses and beautiful parks, with plenty of opportunities to stop for cake along the way.

Choose one main base

Don’t try to combine two cities in three days. The time spent changing hotels and travelling between destinations is rarely worth it.

Stay central

Paying slightly more to stay somewhere convenient can be worth it when you only have three days. You’ll spend less time commuting and can easily return to your hotel when you need a break.

Plan by neighbourhood

Rather than crossing the entire city several times a day, group your sights together. You’ll see more and spend less time on public transport.

Leave some space

Got more time ?

Five days opens up even more possibilities. Discover destinations where you can slow down, explore further and still make every day count.
