What to Pack for a 7-Day Trip: A Realistic Packing Guide
Packing for a 7-day trip doesn’t have to mean packing seven outfits. Find out how much you really need for a week away, what to prioritise and how to adapt your packing to your destination and plans.
What to Pack for a 7-Day Trip: A Realistic Packing Guide
Packing for a week away can feel surprisingly difficult. You want to have everything you need, but you don’t want to spend your trip dragging around a suitcase full of clothes you never wear.
The good news? You probably need less than you think. You don’t have to pack seven completely different outfits, and you certainly don’t need to prepare for every possible scenario.
In this guide, I’ll help you work out how much to pack for a 7-day trip, what to prioritise and how to adjust your packing depending on the kind of holiday you’re taking.
How Many Clothes Should You Pack for 7 Days?
For a typical week away, this is a useful starting point:
| Item | Suggested quantity |
|---|---|
| Tops | 5–7 |
| Bottoms | 2–3 |
| Layers | 1–2 |
| Underwear | 7 pairs |
| Socks | 5–7 pairs, depending on your plans |
| Sleepwear | 1 set |
| Everyday shoes | 1 pair |
| Additional shoes | 1 pair, if needed |
| Dress or smarter outfit | 1, if suitable for your trip |
These quantities aren’t strict rules. You might need more clothes for certain activities, or fewer if you have access to laundry. The idea is to give you a starting point rather than a list you have to follow exactly.
Don’t pack a separate outfit for every day
One of the easiest ways to overpack is to plan seven outfits that can only be worn once. Instead, choose clothes that work together. A pair of trousers might be suitable for sightseeing during the day and dinner in the evening, while a cardigan can be worn with several different outfits.
Before packing, try putting a few combinations together. If a piece only works with one specific outfit, ask yourself whether it’s worth bringing.

Adjust Your Packing to Your Trip
This is where the capsule concept really starts to work. Pick a few colours that work well together. You could The quantities above work as a general guide, but what you pack should reflect what you’ll actually be doing.
For a city break
If you’re spending the week exploring a city, prioritise:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Versatile tops and bottoms
- A light layer for cooler mornings and evenings
- A weather-appropriate jacket or umbrella
- One slightly smarter outfit, if you plan to go out for dinner
You’ll probably spend a lot of time on your feet, so comfortable footwear is more useful than bringing several pairs of shoes for different outfits.
For a beach holiday
For a week by the sea, you might want to bring:
- Lightweight tops and bottoms
- Swimwear : how many sets depends on how often you plan to swim and whether you’ll be able to dry them
- Sandals or flip-flops
- Comfortable shoes for exploring
- Sun hat and sunglasses
- A light layer for evenings
- A cover-up or outfit for going out
You may need fewer everyday outfits if you’ll spend much of the trip at the beach or by the pool.
For an outdoor adventure
If you’re planning hikes, cycling or other outdoor activities, your packing list will depend more heavily on your itinerary.
Consider:
- Suitable footwear for your activities
- Comfortable clothing you can move in
- Weather-appropriate layers
- Waterproof clothing, if needed
- Activity-specific equipment
Check the conditions and requirements for your planned activities before deciding what to bring.
For a cold-weather trip
Cold-weather clothing can take up more space, so think about layers rather than packing lots of bulky outfits.
Prioritise:
- Warm base layers, if needed
- Jumpers or fleeces
- A suitable coat
- Comfortable trousers
- Weather-appropriate footwear
- Gloves, a hat and a scarf, depending on the destination
Wearing your bulkiest coat and shoes while travelling can also help free up space in your luggage.
Don’t Forget Your Everyday Essentials
Once you’ve worked out your clothes, set aside the smaller essentials you’ll need during the week. You don’t need to turn this into another enormous checklist. Just make sure you’ve thought about the following categories:
Toiletries: Bring the personal care products you use regularly, adjusting quantities to suit the length of your trip. If you’re travelling with hand luggage, check the applicable liquid restrictions.
Travel documents: Make sure you have your passport or ID, any required entry documents, booking details and travel insurance information.
Tech: Think about your phone, charger, power bank, headphones and travel adapter if required. Add a camera or other devices only if you’ll use them.
Medication and personal items: Bring any medication you need, along with glasses, contact lenses or other essentials specific to you.

Can You Pack for 7 Days in a Carry-On?
For many trips, packing for a week in a carry-on is possible but it depends on your destination, activities, personal needs and airline baggage allowance.
If you’re trying to travel with hand luggage only, a few decisions can make a real difference:
- Choose clothes that can be worn in several combinations.
- Limit yourself to the shoes you’ll genuinely need.
- Wear bulky items, such as trainers or a jacket, while travelling where practical.
- Use travel-sized toiletries and check liquid restrictions.
- Check your airline’s cabin-bag and personal-item dimensions before you leave.
You don’t have to force everything into a small bag if it won’t work for your trip. The aim is to take what you need, not to make packing light a challenge in itself.
If you want to make the most of your luggage space and avoid bringing things you won’t use, read my guide to How to Pack Light Without Forgetting the Essentials.

Before You Zip Up Your Suitcase
Before you leave, take a final look through your things and ask yourself:
- Have I checked the weather forecast?
- Have I packed for the activities I’ve actually planned?
- Can I combine most of my clothes into different outfits?
- Have I chosen comfortable shoes?
- Have I packed my important documents and any medication I need?
- Is there anything I’m bringing just in case, even though I’m unlikely to use it?
If something doesn’t suit the destination, your itinerary or your personal needs, you may not need to bring it.
Final Thoughts
Packing for seven days doesn’t have to mean preparing seven separate outfits or filling every corner of your suitcase.
Start with the clothes you’ll realistically wear, choose pieces that work together and adjust your packing to the trip you’re taking. You can always repeat outfits, change a layer or wash a few things if needed.
The goal is simple: pack for the trip you have planned, not every trip you can imagine.
