3 days
Long weekends & city escapes
How far can you really go in three days?
Three days might not sound like much, but with the right destination, a long weekend can feel like a proper escape.
The key is choosing somewhere easy to reach, easy to navigate and compact enough to explore without spending your precious time travelling between places. For three days, I’d stick mainly to European cities where you can arrive, settle in and start exploring almost immediately. You don’t need to see everything. Pick one great city, slow down and make the most of it.
Not sure which destination is right for you?
Three days works best when the journey is short and the destination is easy to explore. For a quick European escape, I’d choose based on the experience you’re looking for:

London
The ultimate city break.
London is one of those cities where you could return again and again and still find something new. From royal landmarks and world-class museums to colourful neighbourhoods, historic pubs and incredible food, there’s plenty to fill a long weekend.
Perfect for: History, culture, food & neighbourhoods
Don’t miss: Westminster · South Bank · Covent Garden · Borough Market · Notting Hill · Shoreditch
Why 3 days works: London’s biggest sights and neighbourhoods are spread across the city, but an efficient Underground network makes it easy to explore different areas without spending your entire day getting around. With three days, you can experience the highlights while still leaving time to wander.

Why 3 days works: Prague’s historic centre is highly walkable, allowing you to explore the major sights at a relaxed pace without needing to travel across the city.
Budapest
Thermal baths, grand architecture & nightlife
Budapest is one of Europe’s best city breaks if you want plenty to do without spending a fortune. Explore both sides of the Danube, soak in the thermal baths and finish the day in one of the city’s famous ruin bars.

Grand architecture, culture & coffee houses
Vienna is perfect for a slower three-day city break. Spend your time between grand palaces, museums, coffee houses and beautiful parks, with plenty of opportunities to stop for cake along the way.
Perfect for: Culture, architecture & food
Don’t miss: Schönbrunn Palace · Hofburg · Belvedere · St Stephen’s Cathedral · traditional coffee houses
Why 3 days works: Vienna’s historic centre is compact and easy to explore, while its efficient public transport makes attractions further out, such as Schönbrunn Palace, simple to reach.
How to make 3 days feel like more
A short trip doesn’t have to feel rushed. The trick is to remove unnecessary travel rather than trying to fit more in.
Choose one main base
Don’t try to combine two cities in three days. The time spent changing hotels and travelling between destinations is rarely worth it.
Stay central
Paying slightly more to stay somewhere convenient can be worth it when you only have three days. You’ll spend less time commuting and can easily return to your hotel when you need a break.
Plan by neighbourhood
Rather than crossing the entire city several times a day, group your sights together. You’ll see more and spend less time on public transport.
Leave some space
Don’t schedule every hour. Pick a few things you really want to see and leave room for wandering, eating and discovering somewhere you didn’t plan for.
Got more time ?
Five days opens up even more possibilities. Discover destinations where you can slow down, explore further and still make every day count.
